New releases for the week of 18 September 2016

Both of the books I read this week just kind of leave the reader hanging at the end. The reader will have to get, at least, the second book. There may be more in these series. I just know that both could have left the reader with a more definitive ending. (like the Harry Potter books which gave you some closure, but left you wondering about Voldemort)

Sun Dragon’s Song #1

By Joyce Chng and Kim Miranda

This comic book opens with Ho Yi living at a school for boys while his parents are away at war. On crutches, he is bullied and picked on by some of the stronger boys. What he wants most of all is to become a Sun Dragon Rider like his parents.

There are good drawings, and it could be good for middle grade, but there was so little to the story here that it was difficult to tell.

The Corner Store Witch

By H.D. Lynn

It’s an interesting story with a strong female lead. Leone owns Pulp Magic and when a man from another dimension falls through the roof of her store, her life is about to change. After they are attacked by demons from another dimension, and Leone is able to use a magical staff to send them away. She finds that she now possesses tattoos up and down her arms that used to be on the staff and her temperature is running high enough to burn her family and friends. In the hopes of getting rid of the tattoos, she will travel to this other world with 4 others plus the man who fell through the roof.

Again this was another that needed a more definitive ending.
