A city has been split in half with the haves on one side and the havenots on the other. The havenots are those that do the work. The haves want to remain in firm control over the havenots, but there’s been rebellion for years.

Currently, there is a ceasefire but then the haves blow up a bridge and blame the havenots. Caught in the middle are Nik, a boy raised with the haves but who lives on the other side now, and his friend Lanya.

Nik and Lanya head over to the rich side to find Nik’s father who is a leader with the rebels. Nik is not sure who to trust on either side because both have a lot to lose.

Good for late Middle Grade and young YA. Lots of action and intrigue.


Want to Know: Going to the Theater

The book opens with Lisa and Arthur getting ready for a school play. Lisa will play Colombina, and Arthur playing Pantalone. Then it segues into the jobs in the theater and to the history.

The book explains why theater tickets cost so much. It also goes into the types of plays and sets and costuming. There is trivia and some information about puppet theater with marionettes.

All is told so that it is easy to understand. And there are activities and a quiz at the end.

This book is intended for kids age 5 and older. This is a really good book to read to a child or a class before you go to the theater.



We Awaken

It’s been a tough year for Victoria and her mother. Her mother has dealt with the death of her husband and her son’s coma by working. Victoria has dealt by dancing. She hopes to get into one of the big dance schools in NYC.

Victoria is about to get some help from an otherworld being. Victoria meets Ashlinn in her dreams, and this other girl is able to deliver messages to and from Victoria’s comatose brother. As the two spend more time together, they begin to develop feelings for one another and when Ashlinn tells Victoria she’s asexual, Victoria is not sure what to make of this.

When Victoria’s mom has to go away for business so she won’t be able to take Victoria to her audition, Victoria takes a pretty drastic step in order to make sure she sees Ashlinn.

Ashlinn rides to the rescue, but will she be able to help Victoria achieve her dreams.

Good for YA. Explains asexualism. And there is a fleeting usage of drugs.
