The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Young Readers Edition

by William Kamkwamba

William Kamkwamba lives in a tiny, African, farming village. He is the lone boy with six sisters, and it’s up to him to help his father with the fields.  He also gets to attend school during the off season. He is anxious and eager to learn.

When a drought strikes his village, there is no crop to eat or sell. There is no money to buy any food or to pay tuition, so he can’t go to school. But he still wants to learn.  He turns to the village library and his own ingenuity to keep learning.

He has taken apart radios, dynamos, etc. Now he has the idea to build a windmill to generate electricity.

Inspirational story. One or two difficult parts to read. Wouldn’t read this with kids younger than sixth grade.
