Blame it on the advertising…
Or lack of it. It is rare that you see an industry stumble so hard when promoting itself. The book publishers had a built-in audience. Schools around the country, around the world require students to read a certain number of “literature” books every year. The audience was there for the taking. Soft drink manufacturers know it; so do junk food makers. These are the companies fighting to be located in schools. Fighting to build the habit of use from early teen years.
What have the book publishers done – they have pushed their potential markets away by not advocating their products better. Instead of offering deals on books they know kids will like, they are fine with schools buying up the classics that students have to wade through year after year. Instead of enticing readers, making it something you want to do instead of have to do, they continue to serve a plate of overcooked literature because it is “good” for the students.
Promote the positive. Give the kids something they WANT to read.
“We shouldn’t teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.”
